What causes very frizzy perms? I am a senior, most perms are frizzy.

Have a curly perm & my hair dresser said I can also use my flat iron to curl it into the larger curls I like & it will hold longer. True?

I got a straight perm yesterday. The stylist says its ok to wet in the shower but no shampoo. Is this true? I am worried I just rinsed away my money:(
