    From the CompTIA Network+
    Certification Study Guide, 4th Edition:
    (Paraphrased)

OSI (Open Systems Interconnect) is a standard for manufacturers of networking components that allows them to communicate in dissimilar environments. Each layer is responsible for a specific function or task within the stages of network communication.

Starts with application layer on sending machine, down to physical layer, then from physical layer of receiving machine up to application layer (up/down refers to hierarchy).

    Application: Initiates request
Presentation: Formats data; enacts compression, encryption
    Session: Establishes and manages session
Transport: Breaks data into packets; ensures delivery
Network: Logical addressing, routing, and delivery of packets
Data Link: Physical addressing (MAC), converts packets to signals
Physical: Places signal on the wire
