The earliest mention of what? And Were?
by vew573 on November 28th, 2011
Canoeguide is referring to the apocryphal book of Enoch chapter 20 which names the seven supposed “Archangels”.
Not sure exactly why though as it is generally accepted as an uninspired attempt that copies various parts of the bible in a long drawn out way (use of many words Mt6:7) while also adding some very questionable uncorroborated bits, so is of no real value hence why it is not found at this time as part of the recognised bible.
It also could hardly be described as “earliest” when no date is given or can be ascertained, but it is thought to have been written either in the first or second century BCE after using what had already been known for reference.
There is only one Archangel.

You have your references, I have mine; mine sets Enoch as the earliest mention of archangels (in canonical and non-canonical biblical texts). There are older, non-biblical sources which mention them. Since there's no agreement on number or attributes, the entire discussion ought to take place in a larger, more detailed setting. AB is hardly suitable. Textual criticism is a very detailed topic and much space & time are required.
However, it's a simple matter to establish "there's only one" is totally in error.

The only way anyone can make the claim to there being more than one archangel with the exception of being a Ethiopian Orthodox is by firstly going outside of the recognised closed biblical canon, and secondly ignore the factual meaning of the very word as vew has already very clearly explained in her answer.
“Chief” -
“One who is highest in rank or authority; a leader”
“Main applies to what exceeds others in extent, size, or importance”
“The head, leader, or most important individual in a group or body of people”
“most important; principal, highest in rank or authority”
Both recognised scripture and logic clearly show there is only one Archangel regardless of personal beliefs.

One only has to go to Ethiopia to include Uriel. Michael and Gabriel are mentioned several times each: Michael appearing in Daniel, Jude & Revelation. Gabriel in Daniel and Luke. In the RC canon, Raphael is mentioned.
Your "recognized scripture" appears to be only a single of the hundreds available to us. It's obvious your "logic" fails. Regardless, as you say, of personal beliefs.

canoeguide, Many names are given in scripture, Moses, Noah, David does that make them all “Archangels” too?
Where in the recognised canon does it specifically say or even allude what you are claiming, that any other than Michael by name is an “Archangel”?
by nightcrawler0_2 on November 30th, 2011
Do your own research. I assure you, the information is there. And the phrase "recognized canon" is a misnomer; there are various canons and each is held just as valid by one group as the next is held by its own adherents. And there are no tablets of stone showing precedence of one over the others.

I've already stated what my research has found, unless we are willing to use books such as Enoch which are generally frowned upon there is only mention of one Archangel.
Of course if you have the information that shows this to be incorrect please feel free to share where exactly in the bible anyone else other than Michael is referred to as an Archangel?
