To be an effective "alternative" within the world as we know it, such a substance must meet these conditions:

    - 33,000 calories per unit (equivalent of one gallon of gasoline)
    - Price point below $4.50
    - Highly and quickly dispensible, i.e. minutes to replentish 10 units (equivalent of time to fill a tank)
    - Backward-compatible with current vehicles
    - Available on demand - even when the wind does not blow or the sun does not shine

When you find it or develop it, you're the billionaire. Until then we'll be throwing more good money after bad for Obama's futile Unicorn Hunt.

We could always go back to horses. But then Al Gore would complain about the added flatulence being released in the atmosphere.

    1) "Alternative fuels, known as non-conventional or advanced fuels, are any materials or substances that can be used as fuels, other than conventional fuels. Conventional fuels include: fossil fuels (petroleum (oil), coal, propane, and natural gas), as well as nuclear materials such as uranium and thorium, as well as artificial radioisotope fuels that are made in nuclear reactors, and store their energy.
Some well-known alternative fuels include biodiesel, bioalcohol (methanol, ethanol, butanol), chemically stored electricity (batteries and fuel cells), hydrogen, non-fossil methane, non-fossil natural gas, vegetable oil, and other biomass sources."

    2) "Alternative energy is an umbrella term that refers to any source of usable energy intended to replace fuel sources without the undesired consequences of the replaced fuels.
The term "alternative" presupposes a set of undesirable energy technologies against which "alternative energies" are contrasted. As such, the list of energy technologies excluded is an indicator of which problems the alternative technologies are intended to address. Controversies regarding dominant sources of energy and their alternatives have a long history. The nature of what was regarded alternative energy sources has changed considerably over time, and today, because of the variety of energy choices and differing goals of their advocates, defining some energy types as "alternative" is highly controversial."

"3 Most common types of alternative energy
    3.1 Solar energy
    3.2 Wind energy
    3.3 Geothermal energy
    3.4 Biofuel and ethanol
    3.5 Hydrogen"

Ethanol. Some gasoline in the USA is 10% made from corn already.

There are some ideas about converting coal into oil but these have similar problems to oil. Due to both being fossil fuels.

Other than that it's a question of, wait and see what makes it to general production. I expect more alternatives in the next 20-30 years.
