Individualism is a philosophical viewpoint that values self-reliance. It's quite possible to be an individualist and yet not be self-reliant, and vice versa. An example - Ayn Rand, the founder of Objectivism and popularly regarded as the patron "saint" of individualism was about as individualistic as you can get, but she was on welfare in her latter years, so was not self-reliant.

In a broad sense, no one is self-reliant. We all depend on each other to perform different functions. Such is the way of a specialized society.

Semantically, "individualism" is a more general term, including "self-reliance" as one of its aspects.
