Apply heat directly to neck maybe a heating pad 20-30 minutes 2-3 times a day. Long, hot shower with the water beating on the neck, slowly turn head side to side looking over each shoulder until the count of five. Repeat three times. Apply topical cream such as icy hot or tiger balm. Shut bedroom window because cold breezes may cause awkward positioning to keep warm resulting in a stiff neck. Get a proper pillow. Reserve couch for sitting, alot of times there is not enough room to lie down resulting in stiff neck. If the pain persists after this, make an appointment with your doctor.

Address the muscles below the neck region. Don't strength train the lats, pecs, etc.
How is the range of motion in your neck, can you look all of the way to your left and right?

I have had this problem for years, and finally found solutions. First of all, get a good chiropractor. I tried physical therapy, didn't help. The exercises already mentioned are very important. Never lay on the couch or floor, get a sculptered(also called cervical)pillow and use it faithfully. A good one can be bought from your chiropractor, and they are not cheap. I found I have to sleep on my side, pressure on the back of my neck brings on the stiffness. Cold air, or even just a fan blowing on my neck creates pain. When the stiffness hits I immediately take 2 ibuprophen, the sooner the better, and I rub oil of wintergreen on the tender spot. It is usually swollen in that area. But don't use the oil right after the shower as the pores are open and it will really sting. Wait a little bit.
The chiropractor I go to uses a device call a leactivator. I cannot handle having anyone's hands on my neck and this little gadget just lets out little pops, doesn't hurt and I don't have the rough treatment in that very tender area.
    Hope this helps.

Have you tried the ChiSoft Neck Traction device? It's inflated traction device. You can read more about it at www.chiactivate.com/products/neckmassagers/necktraction.shtml
