You know what's in your past. If you run for public office shouldn't you be prepared when "it" is revealed and get ahead of it?

    You would think. I would most certainly be ready. The worse thing I've ever done is run a few traffic lights on purpose.

    You should.

    But an interesting book on politicians, based on the UK parliament of 2002 but seemingly applicable to many similar bodies, reckoned that about a third of elected politicians are "chancers" - people who will repeatedly try to get away with things that they shouldn't, whose general reaction to a problem is not to fix it but to lie or blarney their way round it.

    "The Political Animal: An Anatomy" by Jeremy Paxman, who is also one of the more aggressive political interviewers on British TV.
