Go straight to the source and leave out the middle man. Give to the poor instead of the charities and churches. My mouth dropped when I saw a priest arrive to church in his Mercedes Benz. And I was thrown aback to learn that another priest owned apartments.

Well, people who work for charities have to be paid, and those at the top have to be paid commensurate with their responsibilities, and then there is stationary and postage stamps, and rent of the executive office complex, the cost of fund-raising extravaganzas with the complimentary limos, the out-of-pocket expenses for the seven directors, so if two and a half cents on the dollar of donations collected actually goes to help the advertised cause, I think that's pretty good going don't you?
In fact, it's a bloody miracle really.

A certain amount is required to operate the charity, so 100% going to the "cause" isn't realistic. However, most reputable charities do publish the percentage of monies spent on operations vs overhead.

when you give, its the thought in your heart that matters, not the control of the gift, alm. just be wiser in your selection.....and giving big is no better than giving small .

The proportion of a charity's money that goes to the actual project is quite irrelevant. What matters is whether they use their money efficiently to do the most amount of good. The following organization spent many work hours figuring out which charities have the most impact: http://www.givewell.org/
