    The French painters did some beautiful work that would lend itself well to textile design, but what about Jackson Pollock?

    I would think it is difficult to use any figurative painting for clothing - it tends to be too loud. If you want to respect the painting, you should choose a painting that is decorative. Some works by Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Jean Arp, Henri Matisse (late cutouts) should work. Some artists have designed clothes themselves - Alexander Rodchenko designed a worker's suit in the 1920's for instance.
