Over and Out

Question

Help answer this question below.

Could anyone answer this computer question for me?

When I'm using my computer, I'm typing or scrolling along and then I'm stuck for a few seconds. I can't type or scroll. Then it "catches" again and I'm able to type or scroll as usual. This happens all the time. We have Windows Vista and I use Firefox. I'm wondering if anything might be running in the "background" that's causing this.

It happens to me, but only on AnswerBag..I think it's a bandwidth crowding issue, as it only seems to happen at certain times of the day (night here). I have a slow connection at the best of times, and I once thought it might be something to do with the wireless keyboard, but I think it's just too much stuff trying to squeeze down the pipe all at once. There are bottlenecks at both ends.

This happens on my phone every so often. I think it's just an issue with the processor. Overheating being the general answer.

I always shut the computer off when I'm done with it. Never on it for more than a few hours at a time. Same with the phone. THAT can really heat up and slow down quick, especially with videos.

But, honestly I just am not sure. Consider this a "bump" so a techie can get wind of the question and offer you better advice. :)

I use to have the same problem. It happened mostly here at AB, and occasionally when I was trying to watch a movie on line. At first I thought it was my antivirus program being too aggressive. After shutting a lot of filters off and the problem persisted I realized I was looking in the wrong direction. It was Firefox itself that was the problem, it's a super memory hog using up space in your computer. I tried switching to Google Chrome and the problem went away. It's free, simple, streamlined and a quick little browser that doesn't have all the extra baggage that FF has. I still have FF and still use it from time to time, but much prefer to use Google. There are a couple of issues with GC as well, but they are minor by comparison to FF.

Some program running in the background is momentarily stealing focus away from your computer.

It's a common problem with Windows.

Chances are it's your hard drive sleeping...or doing some sort of scan. The way hard drives and computers are today, much of what you are doing can be done out of RAM as a virtual drive and your hard drive will go into kind of a sleep or idle state to save power, but once your RAM has been used up it will have to refresh itself by dumping to the hard drive and when that time comes, the RAM has to wait for the hard drive to spin up to speed and during that time you get the delay on the screen between what is being typed and what is showing up.... If it's quiet enough you can hear the hard drive spin up or even make a click sound engaging... That is what I think it is...

I don't really know...but I was having the same problem on my MAC. I suspect you touch type, as I do, and it is the speed of your typing is faster than your computer can accept it. There are always programs running in the background...but when I took mine it to have it repaired they said that my hard drive was starting to go...Hence I now have a new MAC mini lion.....

That sounds like what is happening to me Mrs. C., the pages on here especially stick from time to time and sometimes I get a blank page and have to wait a few seconds for it to load. Also, when I log in, it can take a few seconds for the log in screen to disappear and let me access the site. It might be down to bandwith issues, your browser, I've used Firefox and IE and both have problems with this site. Or it could be a program running in the background such as your anti virus software or a virus if you have been noticing any other problems when using your computer.

I believe it's a pretty common occurrence at any site with a lot of traffic. I suspect a bandwidth problem.

If it's just happening at this site I wouldn't worry to much. If it is happening at every site you visit then the problem may be on your end of the connection.
