Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1868 for replacing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton with Lorenzo Thomas in violation of the Tenure of Office Act of 1867. (The Tenure of Office Act required the Senate's approval to remove any federal official from an office that required Senate approval of the appointment to that office.) Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 for grand jury perjury and obstruction of justice related to the 1994 Paula Jones sexual harrassment lawsuit, based on a report provided to Congress by Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr, who had been appointed to investigate the Clintons' Whitewater real estate dealings. Both Johnson and Clinton were acquitted of the charges.

My sister brought to my attention a year ago that Bill Clinton was impeached and I knew about his troubles, however I never knew or heard he was actually impeached. So in conversation today at work, I stated Bill Clinton was impeached, and everyone jumped all over me and said he was NOT actually impeached but that they were trying to impeach him- What is the truth?

None. Impeachment proceedings were STARTED against Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, but they fizzled out due to lack of a proven impeachable offense. Nixon resigned before impeachment even started.

There have been two Presidents impeached. President Andrew Johnson & John Clinton.There would have been a third but Richard Millhouse Nixon resigned before they could impeach him.No wonder he was called Tricky Dicky!
