A longshore current runs along the shore, parallel to the beach. This current, in conjunction with breaking waves, moves sand. In NJ, for instance, the longshore current moves toward New York from Egg Harbor northward. This causes deposition of sand at Sandy Hook. South of Egg Harbor, the longshore current moves south. This causes sand deposition at Cape May.
