Yes, in fact he does. Remember his departure from the bar when the Georgette character dances with other people in the bar. Jake Barnes leaves her some money, thus substituting intercourse with money. Also, he is "wounded" in the novel. Remember he is a WWI veteran. But we are never told where he is wounded. He has no sexual encounter with the Brett Ashley character, his female obsession. The last scene of the novel where he is bathing in the sea, remember he keeps diving (thus penetrating), makes up for the loss of potency. This is what the literary critics say....
