My car occasionally shakes when I accelerate. It shakes to where it feels like I am driving over rough gravel. It just came back from a tune up. What could cause this?

If the steering wheel vibrates too, then its probably something like the other answers with the tires and rims.

If the vibration is ONLY in the engine and ONLY when you accelerate, I would have the motor mounts checked.

if it is only upon acceleration that you feel it, and it stops after you get up to speed , then check to see if plug wires were changed in the tune-up or u-joints. both will feel about the same except the u-joints you will feel more in the seat. what kind of car? front wheel drive or rear?

It could also be that you have worn out uni joints. This will also cause vibration.

well u had a question that i saw about you and your b/f offroading and getting stuck a few times so it could be that you got mudd in 1 of the rims this will cause your tires to be out of balance even a small amount will cause this so put on some old clothing go to a do it your self car wash shimmi under and spray off the unercarrige and back sides of rims should fix the problem this should be done after offroading anyways i cooked a transmission on a ford bronco as a teen due to not getting the caked on mud off the trans. all that mud pretty much turns into a oven for the engine and trans.

Ok this is embarrassing. My car suddenly started to shake at 40 mph and above. I couldn't figure out why. After it did it for a week I took it in and the guy doing the alignment pulled a big clod of mud out of my right rear wheel that had I guess gotten kicked up in there and then flatted out and dried as I drove.

I have to park in a grass lot at school and sometimes it's pretty muddy so I'm guessing I must of spun my wheels at some point and kicked that up into them. Not sure. But it cost me $35 for an alignment to find that out!

Check your tires first, Then check and see if you have brushed a curb or something and your rim isnt bent. Check to see if the car needs an alignment, and have any and everything checked with the front end of the vehicle suspension and axle.
