    1. Under estimating American opposition - I read a book a couple of years ago about the American revolution, and at that time Britain held so much power over Americans (well not exactly Americans then) that they under estimated their ability to rise up against the established stronghold that Britain had at that time. They had no idea that the colonists would become so enraged and actually attack.

    2. Taxation. A big chunk of the issue between Britain and the colonists was that of taxes. At the time, the colonists were against taxes levied against them which was a sign of oppression and that eventually led to an uprising in defense of what many felt was a decimation of rights. The British had control even before the institution of high taxes, but by enforcing higher taxes and more control, the revolutionary war began with small skrimishes between colonists and British personnel.

    3. Allowing militias to be formed. This came a bit later in the process, but just before the war was underway, milita was formed in defense of the freedom many colonists felt they had lost under oppression by Britain. At that time the British allowed the colonists to form an amateur milita, and by doing so they allowed the colonists to gain much strength, just enough to start a real war.
