Question

Help answer this question below.

My 1993 Corvette will turn over but won't start. The dealer thinks it's the distributor and said it will be about $1000 to fix. Is this reasonable, and is there anything else it could be?

As a dealer tech myself, he should be able to properly diagnose a faulty distributor. Its just basic diagnosis. Start by checking for fuel pressure, then check for injector pulse. Then check for spark at one of the wires. If he is right there will be no spark, if so it could still be a faulty coil, and or wiring. There are three common reasons they do not start, Optispark distributor, the connector to the distributor from the coil (long blue connector that plugs in to the dist. on the pass. side, and the coil. It is probably a safe bet it is the distributor. $1000.00 seems a little high, the part is around $400, and around 3-4hours at about 70 per hour, I'd say 700 seems more reasonable. You should also check to make sure your security light isnt flashing while you crank the engine. Another idea would be to have him replace the waterpump while he is replacing the distributor, there should be no additional labor charge, he already has it off when doing the distributor.

I have a similar no start condition, problem seems to be the anti theft system. When I change the fuel pump relay it will run for about 200 miles. I changed fuel pump, relay, both fuel filters and it runs for about 200 miles. My mechanic has the same problem with his 1989. I am going to check grounds, and electrical connections to the anti theft system. I am somewhat afraid to drive far from home. One of the corvette catalogs have a anti theft plug in which deactivates the alarm system for about $70. This worked for about 12 months for my mechanic and problem has reoccurred. You can change ignition module, fuel pump relay the alarm seems to reset for period of time. I will next check for trouble codes. Hope this helps, when I find the solution I will post it hear.
