It's a metabolic waste product of the massive bacterial flora in the gut. 90% of the dry mass of feces is bacteria, and they virtually all produce gas.

There are quite a few reasons for that. The food that we eat, are broken down into different components by the enzymes and acids present in our stomach. The first process of digestions starts from mouts itself when your food gets mixed with your saliva. After being acted upon by the gastric juices in stomach, it passes into the small intestine where the next step of digestion takes place, but sometimes due to presence of sulphuric and nitric components in our food, gases are liberated at the time of digestion due to the chemical reaction taking place in your stomach. That gives rise to gas problems.Even there are micro organisms in our intestine which act upon the by products that our body is unable to digest and they liberate good amount of gases in the process.

Hence, the gas in gut depends upon various factors like your digestive strength, the food you eat and the micro-organisms that work upon your food.

Bacteria rob your food and produce methane (and other things) in the process.

If you are lucky, you have yeast in your gut. When the yeast do the same thing, they produce CO2 and alchohol. The result: they help save the planet (by not producing methane) and providing you with a no-cost buzz without a trip to the liquor store.

Didn't you know? There's an army of mini cows in there. They're responsible for it, they all produce gas and then it builds up and there you have it.
