  • As of the census of 2000, there were 7,605 people, 2,645 households, and 1,758 families residing in the city. The population density was 610.5/km sq (1,580.5/mi sq). There were 2,976 housing units at an average density of 238.9/km sq (618.5/mi sq). The racial makeup of the city was 58.65% White, 27.13% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 11.58% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. There were 2,645 households out of which 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 19.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.27. In the city the population was spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.7 males. The median income for a household in the city was $24,164, and the median income for a family was $28,527. Males had a median income of $28,385 versus $17,889 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,562.
