As of the census of 2000, there were 49,958 people, 20,913 households, and 12,171 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,378.4/km sq (6,160.2/mi sq). There were 21,798 housing units at an average density of 1,037.8/km sq (2,687.9/mi sq). The racial makeup of the city was 52.50% White, 41.78% African American, 0.16% Native American, 2.56% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.58% of the population.
There were 20,913 households out of which 26.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $46,731, and the median income for a family was $58,028. Males had a median income of $41,787 versus $32,413 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,804. About 7.4% of families and 10.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.6% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
