Catherine Zeta-Jones just went into Rehab for Bi-polar disease. What is it exactly and why does she need to be in Rehab?

Its just a new name for manic -depressive disorder,read all about it here:

Why the rehab ,I know not, unless she's been hitting the bottle or doing substances,who knows.

Bi-polar affective disorder used to be called manic depression. It means a person has extreme mood swings. In the manic phase, a person is energetic and optimistic to an exaggerated level. Then, in depression, he has little energy and feels blue. He may be suicidal. It can get out of hand, so a person needs to be hospitalized.

isn't she married to Micheal Douglas who is really sick and she has had a full plate for sometime now...

That kind of stress can do a lot of damage...

- Oh. Yes. He has cancer but supposedly is beating it. I thought Rehab was for alcohol/drug addicts though Nemo. Maybe the stress has driven her to overuse of one of those? Thank you for your answer and Happy Friday Nemo! :)

- rehab is not always just for addict's but they do throw mental conditions in with them because some of the drugs used to treat both are the same and some of those are controlled so they lump them together...

Life of celeberties is miserable most fo the times. A very few escaped from that. Most of them loose control. There is no public life.

Manic depressives are REALLY hard to live with. It's like living with a live hand grenade. You NEVER know when she's gonna blow. Not fun to be around. If there's a treatment for that I wish they'd let it out!

Its what us brits call manic-depressive disorder. I assume its because of the high quality of psychiatry available at the high end centres. Though a lot of the bi-polariods (yep, just made that up) I know have had problems with drugs.

Or it could be a misdiagnosis and she could be bi-winning.

She probably just needs to get it under control. With her lifestyle career, caring for a sick husband, as well as being a mother on top of that, she's having to deal with alot.

People can't help being bi-polar, but they can decide to get treatment for it. I applaud her for being public about it and not hiding it.
