Possibly because he doesn't routinely condemn atheists as immoral and hellbound, untrustworthy scum, the way certain religions do.
I'm not aware of any point in my life where Bhuddists have come knocking at my door with leaflets and poorly thought out arguments for the necessity of belief in the undetectable sky man, backed up by threats of eternal damnation in a place nobody has shown to exist, and weird book written by bronze age savages who regarded genocide as a good way of proving their gods superiority.

Buddhism has very less to do with either religion or atheism. It's more of a philisophy.

I don't see the relevance. Buddhism isn't theist, and atheists don't normally protest every time a religious leader visits a country.

We generally don't care about other people's religious expression unless it's being forced down our throats, using our tax dollars or violating the Constitution.

One Buddhism is not a theist faith. Also I have never really seen any buddhists try to shove their beliefs down anyones throats. So i dont see why atheists would have a problem with the Dalai Lama

Because the Dalai Lama doesn't advocate forced conversion or subjugation of anybody who disagrees with him.

As an atheist, I admire and respect the Dalai lama. He is a philosopher in search of truth, and although bound by a certain measure of ritualism that I feel is archaic and even counter- productive, he is intelligent, reasonable and doesn't take himself too seriously. In other words, I can't help liking the old bugger. He was probably Irish in a previous incarnation.

Probably because people associate Buddhist monks with either martial arts, which is cool, or sitting quietly somewhere in a peaceful garden contemplating interesting thoughts, which is nice. Neither of these is particularly controversial or anger inducing. Plus, he's small, and peaceful, seems like a nice guy, protesting him would just be...mean?

Im Alec has abandoned this account

Is he being formally received by the Irish government? How much government money is being spent on his reception?

The objections to the Pope's visit to Scotland were not to the visit itself. They were to the fact that he was formally and publicly received by government leaders and royalty, and that significant amounts of state funds were spent on public ceremonies of welcome and state banquets.

Any religious group are entitled to invite their leaders to visit them. But the reception, ceremonies etc. should be the business of that group, not of the government. Individual members of the government, if they are of the visiting leaders faith, may take part in such goings on - but as private individuals, not in their role in government.

As far as I know - you may know better - the Irish government is not putting any special ceremonies for the Dalai Lama. There is therefore nothing to protest. The Dalai Lama is as free as any other person to visit Ireland, and to talk to anybody there that he wants to, as anybody else. It is no more the government's duty to hinder him than to help him.

Maybe it is a way of him earning a few bob, as about four years ago my wife was encouraged to attend an evening with the Dali Lama to be part of the audience, at a cost of $300, I politely pointed out as she was raised as a commie he should not be that important!
