When a baserunner is tagging up on a fly ball, does the baserunner have to wait for the fielder to have possession of the ball or can a runner legally leave the base when the ball hits the fielder's glove?

    The runner can leave as soon as it is touched. In the definition of "Catch" in the official baseball rules it says "A catch is legal if the ball is finally held by any fielder, even though juggled, or held by another fielder before it touches the ground. Runners may leave their bases the instant the first fielder touches the ball."
