Drought resistant plants, Some big decorative boulders, a small tree like a japanese elm or whatever. Create maybe a couple of different levels etc. with a flat stone walkway.

Get in touch with your local extension service. Here in Michigan MSU has programs for people that offer advice on native species and wildlife habitat among other things.

Check with the local Arbor Day folks. They often run sales of trees and shrubs at reasonable rates.

See if your county or state has any type of information or resources you can avail yourself of. Often they have literature available on native species and other information that might be helpful.

Check community events calendars. Often gardeners do plant swaps or low cost sales in the spring when many are thinning or dividing their plants.

Contact Seed Savers and ask if they have any programs or sales that can help you.

Visit or call local botanical gardens and ask about plant sales.

Ask friends if they have divisions of plants too.

Buy some rocks. Cover yard in rocks. Done.

- There was a house in our neighborhood that covered their entire "lawn" in rock. They loved it .. until they tried to sell it. They had to put the lawn back in because no one wanted to buy it.
