You're reading How does a Linux upgrade differ from a new install?
Comments
My fear is the upgrading process will make some apps non functional in the new version forcing me to do so many reinstalls that it defeats the upgrade itself over that of a new install. The fear is not unfounded after reading many problems of those who have upgraded and the hours spent fixing bugs. Why upgrade in the first place? Well there is one bug in my current version I have not been able to fix so the gamble is will an upgrade fix it, introduce new problems or not fix it AND give me new problems.

I can't vouch for all Linux distributions, but I've never encountered any serious problems upgrading from one stable release to another on Debian or Ubuntu. They have alpha and beta releases where people will usually find most problems in the upgrade process and fix them before the final release. I haven't done a clean install on my main system since 8.04 (I'm now running 10.10). If it makes you feel better, you can usually wait a few weeks after the release to see if anyone else has reported serious upgrade problems. I sometimes do this anyway, since the repositories are usually getting hammered with downloads the first couple weeks.
