    As of the census of 2000, there were 2,260 people, 814 households, and 608 families residing in the town. The population density was 45.1/km sq (116.9/mi sq). There were 905 housing units at an average density of 18.1/km sq (46.8/mi sq). The racial makeup of the town was 69.42% Race (United States Census)White, 26.55% Race (United States Census)Black or Race (United States Census)African American, 0.18% Race (United States Census)Native American, 0.18% Race (United States Census)Asian, 0.31% Race (United States Census)Pacific Islander, 1.81% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 1.55% from two or more races. 2.88% of the population were Race (United States Census)Hispanic or Race (United States Census)Latino of any race.

    There were 814 households out of which 37.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.10.

    In the town the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 102.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.1 males.

    The median income for a household in the town was $31,509, and the median income for a family was $38,355. Males had a median income of $31,081 versus $21,914 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,867. About 11.4% of families and 15.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.1% of those under age 18 and 18.3% of those age 65 or over.
