    Because jump rings can vary by size and color, jewelry artists use between 16- to 22-gauge copper, silver, aluminum or craft wire. Wire gauge measures the thickness of the wire; therefore, larger numbers equal thinner wires. A 22-gauge wire, for example, could create a 2.5 mm ring, while a 16-gauge wire makes a 4.5 mm ring.
