The diamonds are the markings around the edges (rails) of a pool table. Some tables have round dots, which look like thumb-tack heads, but the markers are traditionally diamond-shaped and inlaid flush with the surface of the rail.

The diamonds are spaced evenly apart and the space between two consecutive diamonds would measure 1/8 the length of the table, which is equally 1/4 its width.

In this diagram the *'s represent the diamonds. Also, there would be a diamond where each pocket is.
