Make sure it's coat is smooth and not oily, it's eyes are bright and when you put your hand in the cage it comes to investigate you. Also look under it's tail for a yellow wet spot which could mean it has wet tail, that can be fatal if not treated. Always treat their water with the meds for the first week just in case, the pet store can provide that. It's like $6 and lasts a while. Your gerbil should be running about like it's had too much caffeine. Jumping about like a mini kangaroo. When you put your hand in the cage it should come running to it to investigate:) They are very inquisitive and want to know what you have:) They are great little pets to own, but many don't know the proper way to take care of them. Make sure that you use aspen bedding and a wheel that their tail can't get caught in. Never put water in a dish, only a water bottle for small animals. Give them plenty of toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls to chew on. I've even bought bamboo rolls made for lizards. All natural. Also drift wood for reptiles is safe. They have some editable chew huts at Wal-Mart too. Just be sure you give them something that is safe. Not everyone at a pet store knows. So check online too.:) GL:) We love our little gerbils
PS: Don't forget to get them a exercise ball to roll down the hall in, they are so funny to watch and perfect when you need to clean the cage. BTW Only use a glass aquarium, 10 to 20 gallon with reptile mesh lid. They will chew apart anything else and you can create allot of fun inside the aquarium without making a mess:) Do not let a pet store talk you into a habitrail, they are not like hamsters! Your house will be a mess and they will chew at the plastic. The great thing about gerbils is that they are from the desert so they don't drink as much water, and don't have as much waste. So you don't have to clean them as often. In a glass aquarium, you only have to clean it every few weeks. In a habitrail or a wire cage they will toss out their bedding daily! Trust me, glass aquarium is the way to go:) GL:)
Also do not forget they need a sand bath, they don't take water baths. You can got to petsmart and get chinchilla bath sand (not dust) item # 60413. It's must and they love it. I bought a small glass jar from Wal-Mart and they dive right in:) You can see it in my photo:)
