I have also heard it called "the Ham" and "the Magic City." The Ham is pretty obviously an abbreviation. The Magic City comes from way back when it was developing; it's economy was mostly based on iron refining. Iron filings and other metallic impurities blew out of the smokestacks and spread over large areas, so when it was sunny they would catch the light and it would look like the ground was sparkling. This caught on with the local pagan community, who call it "the Magick City" because it has a larger pagan community than the other cities in Alabama.
