That's what I've always heard but I would think that if she is singing then it isn't really over.

    1) Yes, as long as you don't take it too literally.

Actually, it means that it is not over until it is really over. For instance, in Richard Wagner's opera suite Der Ring des Nibelungen, the end of the opera is not reached before the fat lady (the valkyrie Brünhilde) sing - or rather, is finished with singing.

    2) "It ain't over till (or until) the fat lady sings is a colloquialism, essentially meaning that one should not assume the outcome of some activity (e.g.: a sports game) until it has actually finished, similar to a common proverb. It is a perception of Grand Opera, typically overweight sopranos, and perhaps Brünnhilda's final arias from Die Walküre or Götterdämmerung in particular, from an American working class cultural perspective of the early 20th century."

I don't believe anyone ever said that it was over when the fat lady sings.

The expression is, "It's not over 'til the fat lady sings'', meaning that it could go on indefinately longer.

contrary to widespread belief this is not actually known for a fact

all that is truly known is that it isnt over til she does

& indeed only when she finally does will it be truly known to be so or not

    moreover if she sings
in a forest let say us
& there is nobody there any more to hear her because it is over
nor even any trees left to fall & be heard by anyone
then will she really have sung or they really have fallen at all

Not over when she sings, it is over when she sits on you during the lap dance.
