My dog sometimes runs with one of his hind legs in the air. Why?

    It sounds like your dog has a luxating patella. This is not a normal gait and it could set him up for a greater injury. He should be examined by your veterinarian. It's painful and you may notice he carries the leg up when he goes downstairs to reduce the weight on his bad leg.

    Is he front-heavy? Like a pit-bull or bull-dog?
    You said he "RUNS" with one leg up, not limping?
    How does he walk? is there any form of limp?

    What breed, & age?

    like the other commenter, could have a cut paw-pad, something stuck in his paw, broken nail, nails too long. Or could be something at the joint like a cyst or growth, feel his leg from hip to toes, and compare to his other legs.. if you feel something different you want to have that checked out.

    Is there any other unusual behavior, any whining, any discomfort, tenderness, sensitivity? How long has this been going on? When did you first notice it?

    Is he eating/drinking normally?

    Is he old, could be arthritis. Check his nails, they may need cutting. Check his paws he may have a cut or he may have stepped on something. He might have hurt his knee or broken a bone, have him checked out at the vet. They may have to x-ray him.
