Don't use seashells in a freshwater tank, the calcium carbonate will gradually dissolve.

Fake seashells could be fine if they are meant to be in a tank. Real shells will leech chemicals into the water and change your chemical balances. If you don't keep a sharp eye on the levels it will stress and/or kill your fish. The best way to test if it's ok to put any decoration in your tank it to save some waste water when you do a water change and put it in a plastic bucket (enough to cover the potential decoration). Test the qualities of your water (ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, GH, KH, etc) and record them. Then put the potential decoration in the bucket of water and let it soak for a week. Test the qualities of your water again, if any have changed drastically then that decoration is probably not a good idea to use, since it may be affecting your water in an undesirable way.
