• I take Klonopin .5 MG 3 times a day.I used to drink a fifth of Yukon Jack a day.Did I give up one drug(Alcohol) and start taking another? Yes,but I am alive and not in jail.I've been on Klonopin for 15 years and haven't had a drink since 1996.This is just my experience.I can't recommend it for everyone.

• Hi bearwinston. The klonopin definitely has to be better than alcohol. You've been on it for 15 years? Wow. I was worried that it kills brain cells but my dr told me that I was taking a low dosage (like you) and that people who 'abuse' it take 5 mg a day and up. Phew!

  The doctors who told you you have to take that poison the rest of your life (the ones who made you an addict) are full of shit. There is a way out. I've done it.
  
  Klonopin (Clonazepam) is in a class of meds called benzodiazepines. There are many different benzos, but they all act through the same mechanism (gabba receptors...same as booze). Over time they cause receptor downgrade (desensitization of the gabba receptors). The mind loses its ability to calm itself through natural mechanisms (nobody should be on benzos for more than a few weeks, yet Drs. dispense them long-term like tic-tacs).
  
  The only difference between the various benzos are 1) chemical half-life (how long they stay in your system and 2) concentration (modern benzos are far more concentrated: 1mg Klonopin = 10 mg Valium). The secret to getting off benzos (I did it...took 2 years) is EXTREMELY gradual titration (reduction in dosage)and patience. Though it may seem counter-intuitive, reverting to the original benzo Valium (Diazepam)is the way off. The reason is, it is the oldest, and so least concentrated (thus easier to titrate) and has the longest half-life of all the benzos (up to 100 hours, again easier to titrate gradually). This is advantageous because your withdrawals come from wild fluctuations in blood levels of klonopin (only a 30 hr half life) during withdrawal. The slower and more gradual the reduction, the easier the transition off of the poison. Very few doctors are up on the finer points of benzos, nevermind withdrawal. Educate yourself online, then educate your doctor. I went through this hell, and I saved myself when the doctors didn't know how to. You can too.
  
  Also, exercise is extremely beneficial in dealing with the anxiety that will be a part of the withdrawal process. Things will get better. Feel free to PM me if I can help. Best wishes!
