  • At airports with an active control tower and ground control, aircraft are handed off from the tower when they are clear of all active runways, unless they are instructed to contact ground as they cross them. At uncontrolled airports (airports without a control tower or it has closed for the night) pilots announce their position and intentions on a common traffic advisory frequency and are not given instructions by a controller. This frequency is the same whether they are in the air or on the ground. You can read the Air Traffic Control Handbook online here: http://avstop.com/AC/ATC/index.html
