  • Fertility treatments have resulted in increasing rates of multiple births recently. Excluding those, the "natural" occurence of multiple births of any number is around 3% or 3 out of 100 pregnancies. The bulk of these would be fraternal twins. Identical twins occur about once out of 250 pregnancies, and triplets about once in 8,000. Higher order multiples are truly "one-in-a-million". My understanding is that identical twins occur at about the same rate (1/250) for all women regardless of ethnicity or family history. The probability of fraternal twinning, however, varies with family history and ethnicity. Here's a pretty good write-up on the statistics: http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/twins/twin_statistics.html
