It was rejected due to the the immoral deeds of Tempest.

The novel was rejected for a couple reasons. Firstly, Alcott was a woman who was writing about a heroine's refusal to conform to social standards. Decency dictated a woman shamed the way Rosamond was had certain options available. She rejected those options and was, therefore, setting bad example for women of the time period. Additionally, Alcott's novel was rejected because the publisher felt it was too long, depressing, and sensational to be a critical, marketable success.

I think it was rejected because after learning of Tempest's deceit, Rosamond didn't just die and disappear from society because she was shamed to be his mistress. Instead, she escaped and set off on an adventure of her own, avoiding his obsessive pursuit.
