To detect alkalinity or acidity in a solution.
I have found that hydrangea petals do the same job. They are so sensitive that my mother used to change th colour of their flowers by throwing either the old tea leaves or used up steel-wool around the base of the plant.

    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Litmus paper is used to test the pH level in a liquid. The paper contains dyes and when it's exposed to either a base or an acid, it changes to a shade of blue (base) or red/pink (acid). It's often used in chemistry labs and educational settings.
