  • The larger jets that fly transcontinental and transoceanic routes will have cruise speeds in the 500-600 mph range (around .8 mach). That's airspeed. Headwinds and tailwinds will add to or subtract from that for groundspeed. I once flew in a 747 over the Pacific returning from Asia. We got in the jetstream and picked up a 150 mph tailwind, which put our groundspeed over 700 mph.
