Help answer this question below.
The government of Vichy France was a political aberration, born from the collapse of the 3rd republic in the face of military humiliation as the superior forces of Nazi Germany advanced and crushed an outdated and overly conservative and traditionalist French army. France was soon divided into two countries, one called Occupied France that was under direct rule by Nazi Germany, and Vichy France, which was the southern tier headed by a political regime that soon espoused collaboration with Germany. Vichy was headed by two politicians who often clashed on many issues. They were Philippe Pétain, a conservative hero of World War I, and Pierre Laval, an opportunistic politician who was much closer to Nazi Germany. Both were tried for treason after the liberation of France in 1944-1945.
