Question

Help answer this question below.

Is it not possible that we might create consciousness and another reality inside a computer world?

with the advancement of computers, it seems possible that programs might have some ability to understand self and have some ability to be aware? all that seems needed is a motivational premise and a mathematical formulae that is close to evolutionary principals?

Your thoughts?

Is the movie Tron something like that? I don't know how "smart" computers will become. Do they learn from their mistakes and try something new consistently and continually? Personally I think many people are already owned by electronic gadgets...whether computer or ipad or ipod or blackberry or cell phone. Not much further they can go into an alternate reality in my opinion! :)

we already, I belive, are at the point where computers can "think"..

I remember back in 1972, IBM hired the world chess champion, Bobby Fischer to play chess with and match wits with their latest mainframe computers..see if they could "think" as he could...

Given a seemingly endless timescale anything is possible. Computers already exhibit intelligence comparable to plants and some animals. An understanding of the self comes with higher intelligence so at some point as we make them more intelligent they could one day become self-aware.

It has been suggested that intelligent self-awareness might be an emergent characteristic of any sufficiently complex system. We are a long way from that; however, once we can design computers that can themselves design superior computers, we will have set into motion something that theoretically could reach that point in a very short period of time.

To be honest, no.Computing has it's origin from assembly of some complex logic circuits and logic runs on binary mathematics. So, if you want to go beyond the premises of mathematics to design something with computers, it's not going to happen. However, you could use the same mathematics to create an environment as you have described. We have succeeded up to some extent in creating artificial intelligence, but to create another human brain using computers, it should be like trillions of logic embedded inside another trillion and still we would find flaws.
Anything man made has no scope of evolution, but to scope for enhancements is for sure.
May be with the technological advancements, we might reach something close to it, but nothing like creating and exact replica of human brain.
