How far is too far when fighting drink driving?

    Most everyone will agree that drunken driving behavior poses a significant safety threat to the public. Because of that threat, it should be punished severely. However, it doesn't legitimize violations of principles to do so.

    When methodologies such as road blocks, which indiscriminately stop and search vehicles for suspected threats (drunk drivers being one), are employed, they violate principles of justice and non-aggression. It is inappropriate to punish a person for what others do, what they might do, or worse yet what is possible to do. These types of expediencies reflect contempt for human rights and lead down an insidious path. Although such stops are illegal in most communities, law enforcement agencies still periodically attempt to utilize them. When such actions occur, then the fight against drunk driving has gone "too far." The same could be said about the fight against "terrorism."
