Mister IT is trying to Liahona outta here

    Question:
How is it they (Mormons) really think they will become a GOD? There is but one GOD

    Answer:

    SHORT VERSION:
They claim that while there are many gods they only worship the one true god of this planet.

    Got it?
    No?
    Really?

Just kidding . . . of course you are.
Well you're not alone - keep reading.

    LONG VERSION:
Here the salient summation in an answer from FAIR - which is a Mormon Apologist group:

The facts that the LDS do not believe the Father, Son and Holy Ghost are one in substance, and believe in deification/theosis (that humans may eventually become deified and become partakers in the divine nature), has been used to paint Mormons as polytheists. When we examine the technical terminology above, though, it becomes clear that a key point of demarcation is worship versus acknowledgment of existence. If members of the Church worshiped an extensive pantheon like the Greeks or Romans, then the label would be appropriate. In the context of doctrinal differences over the relationship among the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, however, or the doctrine of deification (which is a profoundly Christian doctrine and not just a Mormon one), use of the word "polytheistic" as a pejorative is both inaccurate and inappropriate.

    Confused yet?
    You're not alone.

And apparently many Mormons are included the group of those who have to play a game of mental gymnastics to reconcile this! If you doubt me just use the provided link and read the full article.

And you will note that they spend more time in the article criticizing and condemning those who accuse them of being polytheists than they do actually addressing the issue.

    Now THAT's telling isn't it?

The fact of the matter is that this theological stance is illogical, irrational, and irreconcilable.

Those of us outside of Mormonism see this clearly. Perhaps if Mormons didn't engage in Mind Control Cult "Thought Stopping" and "Information Control" techniques and behavior they would see this clearly as well.

Your question and comments show that you are not interested in understanding what we believe. You are only interested in condemning those with whom you disagree. Therefore, don't expect to get an accurate answer to your question. Rather, exPect to only get responses from those that share your prejudice and lack of real understanding.

Well I'm not quite sure how to answer the first question . . .

So I'm going to assume that you're referring to the fact that the LdS Church has been classified as a Mind Control Cult by Cult Researchers due both the behavior of Mormon Leadership in particular and individual members in general. Here are some resources to consider on that question:

Links to general criteria on what defines a Mind Control Cult as well as how and it applies to Mormonism:

Short "overview" video on Mind Control Cults and how they operate - and I am told by former Mormons that the Mormon Church engages in most of these behaviors:

And I will tackle your second question in a separate answer.

There have been many thousands of gods, worshipped throughout human history, and all of them have exactly the same amount of evidence to show that they exist as your god, none.
So it doesn't matter who they worship or how many gods they choose to believe in, what is disturbing is the brainwashing prevalent in all religions.

Isaiah is repleate with reference to God stating.. I and only I am God. There were no other gods before me, nor shall be any gods formed after me. I know not any.(paraphrased). Now, God must have a very bad memory to have forgotten his father and mother, and all the Mormon spirit children that he and his wife gave birth to.
One can pull many verses of Scripture out of context to support their doctrine or theology. With enough imagination, I could create my own religeon, and be able to pull scripture (out of context) to support it. The Scripture is God breathed. Not just the words, but also the grammer, and the context. We must carefully practice exegesis in our study of the Scriptures. Remember, Scripture interprets Scripture. If a man or an angel teaches anything contrary to Scripture, DONT LISTEN!

To us there is but one God.
But we seen no reason that, being his children, we cannot grow up to become like our father in every way, as indeed the scriptures tell us to do.
But we would be Gods of world we create as he created this one.
We cannot become Gods of this world. It is his, and his alone.
    Nothing "controlling" about that.

It is your believe that there is but one God. Many people believe in many gods (Hindus, animists), many people believe in no god (atheists). You are asking why Mormons beliefs are different to yours.

Joseph Smith was a fraud and Eisegete

It was the same lie told by Satan. Mormonism is very different than Christian faiths.

The LDS missionary is taught how to woo the potential convert. How to talk smoothly and say just the right things.

First they talk only from the bible. Most of the potential converts have not read the bible in a very long time. The missionary reads specific verses, it appears that they are randomly grabbing a verse that meats the moments issues. Yet they are actually very well trained (brain washed) in the art of guiding the victim.

The victim (potential convert) is astonished by the missionaries apparent knowledge of God and God's word. The missionaries tells only the dreamy exciting parts of their beliefs.

You will be together with your family forever. This is a lie even within their own beliefs.

If you are a god of your own planet and you son is a god of his own planet and you sister is a goddess of her husbands planet... well you can not be at two places at once now can you?

The missionary will start to reference less and less form the bible. He will also being referencing more and more from the Book of Mormon.

The whole missionary field is nothing more than a Satan driven structure of lies and deceit. If you ask a specific question concerning one of the ridiculous beliefs, they will avoid it like the plague.

Sorry, it is early and I am rambling.

Controlling is a blanket opinion, I welcome questions, but please ask with facts, and not opinions. In regards to your question of there being only one God, and yet we ourselves can obtain celestial glory ourselves in something that is a doctrine that is understandably hard for non-LDS like yourself to study, or learn about since it is within the confines of the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price. It is hinted in the Bible, but the Bible doesn't go into full detail.
"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." (Matthew 5:48 KJV)
"For I [am] the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I [am] holy." (Leviticus 11:45 KJV)
"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." (1 John 3:2 KJV)
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." (John 14:12 KJV)
"For many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God; And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; is so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together." (Romans 8:14-18 KJV)
The commandment in the ten commandments state "You shall have no other gods before Me." Exodus, Chapter 20. Notice how God said before me. In fact all other places that you find God stating He is The Lord our God. He usually states. "I am the Lord your God." Notice how it's your God, and not the God? How it is always written thy God, your God, and The God of thee whenever God is mentioned? It's written in the same context as thy father, your father. The idea is to worship no other gods, but the Lord your God, the Lord of Abraham. there is of course multiple scriptures in the BoM, D&C, and TPoGP that state why we believe this doctrine, and yet are monotheistic. Another thing to keep in mind though is that we believe that Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three separate and distinct beings from one another. So someone coming from a Trinitarian church would have a hard time understanding our motives. If you would like the scriptures in full detail about this subject from the LDS Triple, I would suggest that you read them at lds.org/scriptures.
