Controlling is a blanket opinion, I welcome questions, but please ask with facts, and not opinions. In regards to your question of there being only one God, and yet we ourselves can obtain celestial glory ourselves in something that is a doctrine that is understandably hard for non-LDS like yourself to study, or learn about since it is within the confines of the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price. It is hinted in the Bible, but the Bible doesn't go into full detail.
"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." (Matthew 5:48 KJV)
"For I [am] the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I [am] holy." (Leviticus 11:45 KJV)
"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." (1 John 3:2 KJV)
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." (John 14:12 KJV)
"For many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God; And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; is so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together." (Romans 8:14-18 KJV)
The commandment in the ten commandments state "You shall have no other gods before Me." Exodus, Chapter 20. Notice how God said before me. In fact all other places that you find God stating He is The Lord our God. He usually states. "I am the Lord your God." Notice how it's your God, and not the God? How it is always written thy God, your God, and The God of thee whenever God is mentioned? It's written in the same context as thy father, your father. The idea is to worship no other gods, but the Lord your God, the Lord of Abraham. there is of course multiple scriptures in the BoM, D&C, and TPoGP that state why we believe this doctrine, and yet are monotheistic. Another thing to keep in mind though is that we believe that Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three separate and distinct beings from one another. So someone coming from a Trinitarian church would have a hard time understanding our motives. If you would like the scriptures in full detail about this subject from the LDS Triple, I would suggest that you read them at lds.org/scriptures.

Please note that while FAIR is composed of LdS, it does not have official ties to the Church, nor does it talk for the Church.
And Mister IT, if you wouldn't throw around the "cult" word more LdS would take YOU seriously.

YOU WROTE
"Please note that while FAIR is composed of LdS, it does not have official ties to the Church, nor does it talk for the Church."
MY RESPONSE
Ah the classic Mormon response when critics use LdS Apologetic materials in ways that they don't like!
Then tell you what Laie, please point us to the OFFICIAL answer to this question on the official LdS Church website - I couldn't find it.
YOU WROTE
"And Mister IT, if you wouldn't throw around the "cult" word more LdS would take YOU seriously."
MY RESPONSE
Yep, that's exactly what I used to say to critics when I was in my Mind Control Cult too! So what we have here is the classic response from a cultist who is enmeshed in a Mind Control Cult and can't come to grips with that reality.
So thank you for the demonstration of how it works Laie. I'm sure that "back in the day" I was a fine case study of how this works too!
However, since the LdS Church is clearly (and objectively) a Mind Control Cult it would less than honest and disingenuous to call it anything else now wouldn't it?
And I'll say the same thing to you that I said to some Jehovah's Witinesses yesterday (changing the name of the group of course): "If the LdS Church doesn't want to be labeled a Mind Control Cult then it needs to stop behaving like a Mind Control Cult."
That was easy!

Mr. IT, I have gone through sere (survival, evasion, resistance, escape) training in the military where they train you in mind control tactics used by our enemies. They never used the mind control tactic where you live the commandments, study, meditate and pray to gain your own testimony of the Gospel. Maybe the next time I go through that course, I'll tell them about that tactic. Maybe you can suggest to the military how to counter this tactic utilized by the LDS Church. Then the military can add it into their resistance training. Funny, I've been a member of the Church all my life. If I wanted to stay home, and not go, I did it. I have known other menbers that if they didn't want to be active, they remained inactive. If they wanted to drink and smoke, they smoked and drank. i should know because my aunts, uncles. and cousins all smoked, drank, and took drugs.
You call the LDS Church a cult because you have nothing better to offer except to tear the LDS Church down to bring yourself up and make yourself look better. Your doctrine is empty and lacking in details. Like Isaiah said, the religions of today have "...changed the ordinances and broken the everlasting covenant ...." They have changed the organization of the Church and lost the authority to administer in its ordinances.

There are many sociological aspects we can examine to determine if a group fits the criteria of a “cult,” but one of the easiest models to use in evaluating cult mind-control is given by Steven Hassan in his book Releasing the Bonds: Empowering People to Think for Themselves, published in 2000 by Freedom of Mind Press, Somerville MA.
In chapter two, he gives four basic components of mind control, which form the acronym BITE. You can read more about the BITE Model here:
http://freedomofmind.com/resourcecenter/articles/bite/
This model was based primarily on Robert Lifton's work but also draws from research from Margaret Singer and many others. It doesn't target any group in particular and can be applied to ANY group be they religious, political, secular, etc. It just doesn't matter.
Steven Hassan recommends that the BITE Model analysis be done by former members as they have the greatest insight into the group's formal and informal behavior. So with that in mind, here are links to the BITE analysis's that have been completed by former Mormons.
I would politely suggest that these analysis's answer this nagging question rather nicely - and I will leave it to the reader to decide the answer for them self what that answer is:

And once again I will ignore your usual litany of personal attacks, insults, and ad-hominems and point you AGAIN to my profile that states explicitly:
"IF YOU DON'T LIKE ME AND/OR DISAGREE WITH ANYTHING I'VE SAID HERE AND WISH TO SILENCE ME THEN DON'T ANSWER MY QUESTIONS, DON'T COMMENT ON ANY OF MY ANSWERS, OR COMMENTS AND DON'T PRIVATE MESSAGE ME: THAT WILL DO IT - YOU'LL NEVER HEAR FROM ME AGAIN."

In fact, if you hadn't slapped down your latest round of drive-by slurs, insults, and throw-downs I wouldn't be her now.
Got it mate?

Mr. IT. You come up with such off-the-wall stuff that I can't help myself. You are not concerned about knowing or discussing the truth. You merely want to act like you are some treasure of spiritual knowledge. Don't you know that you can't believe everything you read on the internet? God is the source of all truth. His knowledge is much more reliable than anything you can read on the internet. Why don't you learn to communicate with Him?

And still the personal attacks continue . . .

. . . as does the refusal to address the evidence that's been presented.
[For the benefit of the reading public this tactic of attacking the person presenting the evidence rather than speaking to the evidence that's been presented is called an "Ad-Hominem" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem ) and you may note that it's a favored tactic of Mormons.]
