  • Both. A missionary is assigned to a specific mission. That mission has geographic boundaries, and s/he is to stay within those boundaries. S/he will more than likely be assigned to several different communities over the course of his/her mission. My mission covered most of the state of Utah (from the Point of the Mountain south), as well as parts of Nevada (Mesquite and Panaca areas), Arizona (from the Utah border to the northern edge of the Grand Canyon) and Colorado (Dove Creek). I was assigned to Heber City, Wellington, Kanab (including Fredonia), Pleasant Grove, Mesquite and Provo.
  • It depends on the type of mission that we are discussing and the age of the missionaries. The young singles serving proselytizing missions can find themselves serving in multiple areas within the boundaries of their respective missions. In my case, I served in the Oklahoma Tulsa Mission. At that time it covered most of Oklahoma and parts of Northern Texas, Southern Kansas, Southwestern Missouri, and Northwestern Arkansas. I wound up serving in all of these states in the course of my mission, except Kansas. In one transfer, I wound up going from Southwestern Oklahoma to Southwestern Missouri. On the other hand, older missionaries will usually spend their entire mission in the same area.
  • It depends on the mission. The Sisters who come from all over the world to serve on Temple Square in Salt Lake City spend about 6 months there, then 6 months in another mission before returning for their final 6 months on Temple Square again. Many Filipina sisters spend their time "in the field" in Southern California, for instance, due to the large number of Tagalog speakers found there. Senior couples and service missionaries are usually called to work in one particular place, but some will go from one mission to another (for instance, medical missionaries may serve several missions, even in several countries).
