Do those modified front bumpers and side skirts and back bumpers actually do anything, or are they just for looks?

Unlike many spoilers and some big mufflers, most body-kits really serve some sort of actual function to increase performance. When properly designed, they alter airflow under the car for increased downforce (or reduced lift), which improves handling. Additionally, many front bumpers allow increased airflow through the radiator and (for turbocharged vehicles) intercooler; an important consideration for many modified engines and any car used in competition.
