  • Although the actual census population of Nauvoo, IL in 2000 may have been 1,063, the actual population of those living within the city limits was several hundred more. Nauvoo, IL is a historic 1840's town that contains over 300 LDS missionaries (mostly seniors) who conduct tours of various reconstructed 1840's buildings. These unofficial citizens are serving only for a temporary amount of time and retain their official residency in other cities/states throughout the United States. Many retain their vehicle registration and voting rights in those states as well. The population of Nauvoo, IL has also increased considerably after the announcement by the LDS/Mormon church of reconstructing a temple originally destroyed by fire and tornado in the 1800s. BYU (Brigham Young University) also established at one point a semester in Nauvoo program where students lived/boarded at the JSA (Joseph Smith Academy), which increased the actual population more. During the tourist season, there is an estimated 200,000 visitors to the small town, which heavily impacts it in various ways.
