  TAW, this is not what scripture says.
  Adam and Eve had "sons and daughters" (Ge 5:4), Genesis is also not in full chronological order, Chapter 5 says at the beginning that it "is the book of Adam’s history".
  Cains wife was one of his sisters.

• TAW we can all think what we like, but the only thing I can see added here is “ALL BOYS”, when scripture has always plainly stated since Genesis was completed in 1513 BCE “sons and daughters” :)

• Indeed, it's true, NC - the original Hebrew of the Tanakh reads the same, TAW - there's no scriptural addition.
  
  It's interesting to note that Adam lived a whopping "930 years; then he died." Obviously they weren't going off the Gregorian calender back then. My guess would be that the concept of "years" was more equivalent to our concept of "months," as it would have been easier to count the cycles of the moon than it would be to figure out how long it took Earth to circle the Sun, in which case Adam lived to around 76 years old: a very plausible figure (regardless of the the clear mythological implications of the creation story).

• This is something many agree with, although if it were true Adam would have been around 10 years old when he fathered Seth even younger when he had Cain and Abel, and Eve was younger still, so it is unlikely to be the case.
  
  Even more evident, going by this system Jared would have been 5 years old when he had Enoch (Ge 5:18), Enoch would have also been around 5 years old when he had Methuselah (Ge 5:21), and so on, all showing that it is very unlikely to be referring to months, but rather as it says, years.
  
  Due to Adam and Eves perfect bodies at that time, they were designed to life forever and would have done so if they had not sinned, their 900 odd years was really nothing compared to what Jehovah intended for them, and what God's word says mankind will attain to in the future.
  
  Lifespan has reduced over time (with the exception of modern medicines effect), this agrees with how the bible shows mankind to be slowly moving away from God in a spiritual sense and thus living for shorter periods, and God's love for humankind, as life has become worse lifespan has decreased.

• That's an interesting concept, NC; I'd never thought about the time they actually spent in paradise not aging. It's also important to note they were never "10 years old" - they seem to have been formed as adults who would never age, so having Seth when he was 10 years old is plausible, until we get into the Jared/Enoch thing. But it does stand to reason that once they figured out sin, they were banging a lot, and probably would have had all three famous boys (which apparently some people believe were all the children they had despite things like the reality of what was written) within the first few years. Very interesting to think about.
  
  Do you happen to know what the original Jewish calender saw as a year? There are other strange accounts of years that can't be accurate - obviously Adam didn't live to 900 years in terms of what we now think of as years - and clearly the Earth wasn't made in mere days. What does modern Judaism say about these numbers and their meanings? It's interesting to read the Tanakh, as it's constantly interpreted in many ways. I'd like to hear any thoughts you have.

• TAW, not sure what you mean the first mention of Cain and Abel is in Ge 4:1 the first mention of Seth is in Ge 5:3 the three boys as you say, in the very next verse Ge 5:4 it explains about the daughters, now is this “added later” ?, it was wrote immediately after mentioning Seth's name.
  
  I think guessing as you say may be where your problem lies, nothing pops up, the account is indeed plain and simple, but we would need to at least read and understand it, before calling it “a b.s story” don't you think ?

• Well, by that logic, the whole document is an addition after the first word "When"! (As in, "When God began to create...") Is that what you're arguing here? Because that's a pretty moot point. Have you even read the Tanakh? Here, let me break it down for you:
  
  Book 5 starts out by saying (this is me paraphrasing), "We're gonna' lay down Adam's lineage. His first born son was Seth. Then, over the next 800 years, he had a bunch of other sons and daughters. And, here's their lineage..." They proceed to list all the boys and none of the girls, because back then, nobody gave a crap about the girls. Eve wasn't exactly Miss Popular, either! I really don't see what you're arguing here. But it's pretty absurd. Get yourself a copy of the Tanakh and figure out what you're talking about.

  Yes that is true Adam and Eve were unique in a number of ways, they were indeed formed with adult bodies, but they mentally would have been 10 at the time in question with much to learn, just as Jared etc. would mentally be 10 when was 10 and looked 10, Adam would have been mentally 10 when he was 10 and looked as an adult.
  
  Portions of a bible encyclopaedia “Insight on the Scriptures”, that may be useful regarding “year”;
  
  In Noah’s time we have the first record of the ancient reckoning of the length of the year. He evidently divided the year into 12 months of 30 days each. At Genesis 7:11, 24 and 8:3-5, the “log” that Noah kept shows 150 days to be equal to five months, the year being 360 days long.
  
  In ancient Egypt the year was made up of 12 months of 30 days each, and five additional days were added annually to bring the year into harmony with the solar year. The Babylonians, on the other hand, held to a lunar year but added a 13th month, called Veadar, during certain years to maintain the seasons in line with the months to which they normally corresponded.
  
  Most ancient peoples used a year of 12 lunar months. The common lunar year has 354 days, with the months having 29 or 30 days, depending on the appearance of each new moon. It is, therefore, about 11 1⁄4 days short of the true solar year of 365 1⁄4 days that is 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes and 46 seconds.
  
  The Hebrew years were anciently reckoned as running from autumn to autumn, the first month starting around the middle of our present month of September. This coincides with the Jewish tradition that the creation of man took place in the autumn. Since the Bible provides a record of Adam’s age in terms of years (Ge 5:3-5), it is reasonable that the count began with the time of his creation, and if this indeed occurred in the autumn, it would explain to some extent the ancient practice of beginning the new year at that time.
  
  In prophecy the word “year” is often used in a special sense as the equivalent of 360 days (12 months of 30 days each). (Re 11:2, 3) It is also called a “time” and is occasionally represented symbolically by a “day.” (Re 12:6, 14; Eze 4:5, 6)
  
  Interesting, why is it you feel it is not a literal 930 years that Adam lived ?, as already discussed due to their perfect state and earthly conditions that existed then (lack of pollution etc.), and the fact the human body was designed to live without end, which is backed by many finding regarding the body, it seems quite a reasonable period.
  
  Regarding the creation of the earth, it is believed that the creative days as you say were Godly days of undetermined length, possibly many thousands of human years long, and not 24 hour human days, this reasoning is supported in a number of ways, one of which is the six days were all reported as ending, yet the seventh had no end mentioned in scripture, as we are still over 6,000 years later within God's rest period or Godly day.

  It is worded that way as it is in many parts of scripture, as it is not primarily a chronological record, but rather in relation to what happened with accounts of what is needed or important to those wanting to learn.
  If your outlook is a negative one, you will no doubt find many occurrences where this happens, but all have valid reasons to those who look without their own personal agendas.
  
  It is a common error to view humans back then as we see them right now, they were different in a number of ways, which are clearly seen in scripture, due to their near perfect bodies and near perfect living environment generally unspoiled by the hand of man.
  
  Yes at that time the marriage of a close relative was allowed, as their condition allowed for such with no detrimental effects and to serve a purpose.
  We view things differently now for good reason and due to the conditioning imperfect life has given us over many years.

• NC - I don't believe a human can live 900+ years naturally - I guess that would be why God said, in GEN 6:1 "My breath shall not abide in man forever, since he is too flesh; let the days allowed to him to be one hundred and twenty years." Clearly God just got sick of them all living so long. Or, perhaps he saw that he was keeping dying bodies alive and had created zombies. I don't know.
  
  I choose to see the entirety of Genesis/Exodus as a mythological account, as opposed to a literal one, but I still think it's important to understand what the stories are actually saying and implying. It's an interesting perspective you lay down about "The Seventh Day," which I suppose was the notion of Deism back when it got popular 200ish years ago. Though, it's obvious scientifically that the Earth was formed around 4.5 billion years ago, and things progressed from there. I mean, the way the Torah words the sun/moon issue as "two great lights" as opposed to explaining how they actually exist show that the words written down were of a basic understanding of humanity, at the time, just like any other creation story I've read. And, the same goes for the modern scientific explanation - in a few hundred years, people will be laughing at the simplicity of what scientists believe to be true today (just like we, today, laugh at the medical concepts of 300 years ago).

  Well put, I would say he recognised that the human condition due to sin would have resulted in much misery if he allowed humans to continue living for such lengths of time, not only inwardly but also in what could have resulted from humans with bad intent, given the chance of such a continued life span, overall it was the kindest thing to do for the benefit of the majority, in view of our temporary condition.
  
  Yes, regarding the sun and moon, this is true, many things are recorded in basic understanding, they had to be understood by people back then also, but they are still an accurate description. There are also some things well ahead of the times they were wrote in, and are only understood now with hindsight.

• @NC - I agree on the "accurate description" part - I also see it as far from the all-encompassing truth that others might see it as - clearly, from my comments here, you can see I get my information from many sources, which I think is a wonderful thing to get in the habit of doing and I can see that you do the same, given your perspective on Western Civilization. The perspective on the temporary mortal condition is an interesting one, as within two books of him taking away man's effective "immortality" and leaving them to a mortal existence, he decided they were all so sinful that he was going to wipe them off the face of the planet. Talk about epic backfires.

  Adam and Eve had sons and daughters. Able and Seth were likely referred to by name because of their good standing with God, plus what happenned to Able and Seth being an ancestor of the Messiah. Cane was likely only mentioned by name due to his horrendous act of murdering his brother. The Bible does not tell us every detail of everything. Just what we need to know.
  Genesis 5:4 "And the days of Adam after his fathering Seth came to be eight hundred years. Meanwhile he became father to sons and daughters" If you read Chapter 5, you will notice that they usually only mention the firstborn son, even if the first child was a girl, as far as genealogies go. Compare Joseph's genealogy at Matthew 1:1-17 or Mary's an Luke 3:23-38 where it just gives the name of Mary's husband Joseph as the parent (being the son, as the opinion was, of Joseph"). Prior to the destruction of the temple in 70 C.E., the Jews received their inheritance and traced their lineage through their Fathers. All of these records were kept for us to trace the lineage of the Messiah.
  
  Take Jacobs children for example, the Bible talks usually just about his twelve sons. Gen 35:22
  If I am not mistaken, sometimes there is only mention of the ones that are being spoken about in a significant way, especially so with women in Genealogies. I am thinking that Dinah is only mentioned because of what happened with the daughters of the land, which would have been bad associations leading to the problem with Shechem. Genesis 34 Again, if I am not mistaken, Dinah is the only daughter mentioned by name, though he had other daughters. (Gen 46:7,15)
