The population of Mercer Island, Washington was 22,036 at the 2000 census. It is also the name of the island in Lake Washington with which the city is coterminous. Based on per capita income, one of the more reliable measures of affluence, Mercer Island is the 7th wealthiest of 522 areas in the state of Washington.
