I answered the same type of question before in AB and got pounced on for it but I'll answer it again. The word "tithing" is only mentioned in the New Testament concerning the hypocritical Pharisees and then again in Hebrews concerning the Old Testament command for Israel to support the priestly tribe of Levi. There is NO command for the New Testament Church to tithe.

The Apostles didn't receive a paycheck, they simply had their needs met. I think pastors shouldn't receive paychecks either. They ought to be given only what they need by the church and no more. Jesus never started a business. This would eliminate 95% of America's pastors overnight, because they'd be living a very simple life with no surplus, and would resign.

1st Corinthians 16:2 states, "Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come." This was money collected to support Paul's work in the Lord, as a Gospel preaching missionary. There is no record in the New Testament about money being collected to support the local church. All money collected was DISTRIBUTED as every man had need.

Heres a partial list of truths about the Christian tithing doctrine.

    1. Abraham never tithed on his own personal property or livestock.

    2. Jacob wouldn’t tithe until God blessed him first.

    3. Only Levite priests could collect tithes, and there are no Levite priests today.

    4. Only food products from the land were tithable.

    5. Money was never a tithable commodity.

    6. Christian converts were never asked to tithe anything to the Church.

    7. Tithing in the Church first appears centuries after completion of the Bible.

How often have you heard this said by church leaders?.....

"Tithing was a form of worship to God, and since we still worship God, we must still tithe."

That question can be answered in one sentence.....

"Since burnt offerings were a form of worshiping God, and since we still worship God, must we still offer burnt offerings to God?" Ridiculous.

The Bible DOES teach that we should give to the poor, and to our enemies if they thirst or hunger, and to the man of God who is faithfully preaching the Gospel. Tithing was for Old Testament Israel. If tithing were for today's believer, then it would have been reiterated in the New Testament; but it was not.

I don't believe that the Bible states that your charitable giving need be to the church, per se. I think churches have applied that interpretation for self-interest reasons, although I believe that giving to the church is just fine.

The tithe, interpreted as a minimum of 10%, can be cheerfully given to anyone in need and, in my opinion, will be regarded favorably by God. Personally, I quietly observe the "Pay It Forward" philosophy, similar to that presented in the excellent film of the same name starring Richard Dreyfus.

The holy scriptures give us an answer to this question. It is at 2Cor 9:7 "Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." This is the way true Christians are to act in supporting their church or congregation. The Bible is also very clear on the Babylonish practice of having a paid clergy class. Jesus made this very clear at Matt 23:8-10. He also stated at Matt 10:8 "...You received free, give free." Having a clergy-laity distinction is not Christian.

    Luke 6:38
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

tithing doesnt have to be just 10% of you money though. It can refer to giving 10% of your money, time or talents.
