If you pilfer small things from people..like candy or Tums at work..In principle is that just as bad as being a morally bad hurtful person?

You betcha! It's still stealing, and you already know that's wrong! It doesn't necessarily make you a bad or immoral or even hurtful person - it just makes you a thief. Untrustworthy. Deceitful. Nothing good comes of it, and one day someone might just catch you in the act. Plus, it's just really bad karma!
Don't forget, we are supposed to treat others the way we expect to be treated ourselves...It's called mutual respect for everyone you meet in this life.
Do not underestimate the harm that regret and guilt do to your conscious. It's not worth it!

  I agree with what you said but I always think wel..How would you like it
  if somebody did that to you? It's not good karma to take shortcuts to any
  possesions not earned and that umbrella you took from that guy sitting
  next to you on the T before getting off is going to be relost anyways..Its not karma that lasts but reflects on your true character and guilt shows you this and one should know it.

Your choice of word (pilfer) is interesting. It's etymology goes back to "pelf" which means "money or wealth, esp. when regarded with contempt or acquired by reprehensible means". (dictionary.reference.com) Any way one looks at it, it's stealing, i.e. taking something, unbeknownst to the provider/purchaser, that does not belong to us. PERIOD. Rationalize, relativize, categorize, grade, degree the act (based on intention/desire) as much as one must, but it all boils down to...stealing!! Pack of gum, someones wallet, a bank, Fort Knox, a life...stealing is stealing, no?! As to "just as bad as..."? Well, look in the mirror! What or who do we see? I certainly don't have to be the judge of that. You and I are quite capable of doing that all by our lonesomes, eh?! Unless of course which is why you posted your question in the sociopathy sub!!
