  • Yes it is. A vehicle may not park facing the wrong direction, or more than 18" from the curb (the curb of the side on which you are suppossed to park). At least this is the law in California - I found out the hard way...
  • i witnessed a multi-car crash on an unlighted highway (hwy 138) , cars could not see the totalled car in the center of the lanes, so i turned my car around and parked on the wrong side of the street to light up the vehicles with my head lights... when the highway patrol finally showed up, they did not say a word about my "parking style". but i guess it just depends on the situation. in my dads neighborhood cars are parked everywhere, but its a rural area... sooo. i don't know for sure.
  • Yes and here is the intent of the law. parking an automobile, on the wrong side of the street, will create a liability situation, if said automobile is started and/or parked, with said vehicle's headlights on. a vehicle, parked in this position, is a safety hazard to oncoming traffic. how many times have you faced a vehicle, parked on the wrong side of the street, with its headlights on and completely blinds you?
  • Yes. her is why....in the daytime, there is generally not a problem with parking on the wrong side of the road. the problem is nightime. the headlights, of an automobile parked on the wrong side of the road, can blind the oncoming driver and cause an accident. People who park their vehicle on the wrong side of the road, in the daytime, may leave at night, turning on the headlights and blinding oncoming vehicles. this is where the problem is created and why the law was passed.
  • It is, I found out the hard way as well. I've actually just got off the phone to the LA Parking department and they explained the whole thing to me. To be honest it is a bit silly, here in the UK, most people turn on their headlights and pull out into the road when there isn't a car coming towards them. It is a stupid law that I think was passed just to con foreigners out of $40.
  • In addition to blinding you - if it is an unlit street it can cause further problems, for instance a woman and her son were killed here because a driver traveling up a hill on a curve came around the corner to a person on the wrong side of the road with his headlights on, thus giving the impression that he was stopped on his side of the road. The second driver then proceeded to "correct" his driving position, to accommodate for traveling even further right, when he struck and killed mother and child. The driver of the first car was on the wrong side of the road with headlights on in a dark (no streetlights) area, on a curve and on a hill. Completely his fault. Those people did not have to die.
  • Yes............ Ever go down a street and some idiot is parked on the wrong side of the road with headlights on??
